According to the National Residents Matching Program, this year an all-time high of 30,232 PGY-1 positions were offered. The trend in the total number of applicants is even more dramatic. Out of these applicants, some come from foreign schools and are required to obtain visas. Many U.S. citizens have also completed medical school abroad to finish up the residency part of their training in order to obtain board-certification.
This year a record number of applicants have received rejection notices for an interview from the residency training programs they applied to. In order for a residency applicant to become a residency candidate they must have at least one interview. The residency programs are just too overwhelmed.
